An Augusta grandma has been arrested for child cruelty after her 10-year-old grandson tested positive for cocaine, authorities said.
Carol Brown, 53, confessed that her grandson might have got the cocaine from her while living with her at Fox Den Apartments.
An investigation began after the boy was given a urine test during a doctor’s appointment and tested positive for the drug. Brown told authorities that she was “in the process of snorting a line of cocaine” when the boy walked in on her, according to a sheriff’s report. She didn’t want him to see what she was doing, so she asked him, “Do you want Grandma’s phone?” The child took possession of the phone.
“Carol stated that is the only way that (he) could have come in contact with the drug,” a report says. “Carol stated she had been depressed lately and felt as if none of her friends were trying to help her.”
DFACS took custody of the child.
Brown was committed to the Charles B Webster Detention Center on the charge of second-degree cruelty to children. She has no criminal history in Richmond County.
